ABOUT ACCOUNT TREE
We did not start as a software company. We started with one principal and a spreadsheet.
Account Tree exists because somebody in our family had this problem, could not buy a solution, and needed one anyway. He is still doing that job today.
HOW IT HAPPENED
2001
A principal, thirty thousand dollars, and no system
Responsible for the money, with nothing built to track it. We put together a spreadsheet. Then other schools asked for a copy.
2019
The spreadsheet ran out of road
A workbook cannot enforce an approval or hold a document. So we built what it should have been: a system where the process runs first and the record follows.
Today
Districts across the Country
Still small, still family-owned, still tested against one question: would somebody actually use this on a Monday morning?

Student activity funds are not a module we bolted onto something else. There is no larger roadmap that this competes with for attention.

The person who answers your email is the person who writes the code. There is no tier-one queue, and no account manager relaying your question to someone else.
Family-owned, and staying that way
No investors waiting on an exit. The plan is to still be doing this when your current business manager retires.

WHAT WE BELIEVE
Money is not the lesson. Decision–making is.
A student activity fund is the first budget most kids ever touch. Lock it down so hard that no student goes near it and you have solved an audit problem by removing the point of the fund.

The answer is not less student involvement. It is a process clear enough that involving them is safe.
Process before record
Most breakdowns are not accounting failures. The transaction was recorded correctly — it just should not have happened yet.
Simple enough for a track coach
If an advisor needs training to submit a request, they will work around it, and the workaround is where the gap lives.
The small fund deserves the same rigour
Money that belongs to kids should be handled as carefully as the general fund — without the district hiring anyone to do it.
